From Dirt Mounds to a Solid Foundation
CERV is proud to highlight the recent success of local CERT volunteers in relocating the Oak Grove CERT emergency supply container to a safer and more accessible location behind the dance building at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC).
The move addressed long-standing issues with erosion, limited access, and safety hazards caused by nearby construction activity. The updated location now offers a level surface, parking, lighting, and proximity to campus facilities—improving readiness and safety for the community.
A Coordinated CERT-Led Effort
This successful relocation was led by members of the Oak Grove CERT team, in coordination with the City of Monterey, Monterey Fire Department leadership, and MPC’s construction contractor. Local CERT volunteers including Lee Whitney, Mike Kennedy, Dennis Duke, Demetrius Kastros and Greg and Carolyne Profeta participated directly in the physical move and preparations.
Through these partnerships and community support, the relocation was completed on July 24, 2025, over the course of a single workday. The contractor generously provided equipment, pallets, and shrink wrap to assist with the effort. Volunteers helped unload, repackage, and reload the container’s supplies during the transition.

A New Location with Greater Community Value
The new site behind the MPC dance studio offers significant advantages:
-
Paved surface: Safe, level access for vehicles and volunteers
-
Lighting: Increased visibility for night-time use
-
Nearby facilities: On-site bathrooms and convenient parking
-
Secure access: Far removed from erosion-prone dirt mounds
These changes strengthen the operational readiness of the Oak Grove CERT team and their ability to serve the local neighborhood in times of need.
Celebrating Volunteer Contributions
CERV shares this update to celebrate the dedicated efforts of Monterey CERT volunteers and partners who make community preparedness possible. While CERV did not lead or manage this move, we recognize and support the work of local CERT teams and remain committed to amplifying their impact.
Our community is stronger when we work together—and this project is a great example of how CERT teams, city staff, and volunteers can collaborate for the good of all.
